Celtx

Celtx is media pre-production software, designed for creating and organizing media projects like Screenplays, Films, Videos, Stageplays, Documentaries, Machinima, Games, and Podcasts. The software is developed by Celtx Inc., which is owned by Boston, Massachusetts-based media company Backlight. Celtx screenwriting software is a cloud-based solution that provides indie filmmakers with tools to generate production documents.

WritingCeltx employs a recognized screenwriting editor for both stage and screenplays. A rich text editor module for writing novels is also included in Celtx.

Project collaboration, management, and storage Project collaboration and online file storage are available through Celtx Studio.

PublishingThe Celtx Exchange allows scripts to be uploaded for public viewing, peer review, and commentary.

SchedulingCall sheets, stripboards, shooting schedules, and production calendars can all be created using Celtx.

Elements35 different elements, including Actor and Special Effects, are available in Celtx and can be added to the project. These components can have additional information added to them in the form of text or media. Directors and writers can tag specific parts of each script using Celtx. A script breakdown can then be created using these tagged elements.

Pre-production visualization tools

StoryboardingStoryboard sequences can be created using Celtx and then printed or viewed using the program’s integrated animatic playback feature.

Shot BlockerA sketch or setup can be created with the Shot Blocker tool and then added to a storyboard. The Shot Blocker includes tools for drawing lines, arrows, shapes, and text, as well as pre-loaded icons and imagery for cameras, lights, and people that can be labeled with text.

Technology

Celtx is derived from desktop applications created using free and open standards (like HTML, XML, and RDF) and distributed under the Mozilla Public License version 2.0. The input and voluntary work of members of the global Celtx community were largely responsible for the feature development and language translations of the application.

Developer

The Celtx Inc. company is based in St. John’s, Newfoundland, and Labrador, and produces Celtx software. Backlight, a media technology business based in Boston, Massachusetts that was established in 2022, is the owner of Celtx, Inc. Backlight also owns ftrack, iconik, Wildmoka, and Zype, four additional media software companies.
