NVIDIA teases Ray Tracing: Overdrive, RTXDI, DLSS 3 for Cyberpunk 2077 – With the release of the Ada Lovelace GPU architecture, NVIDIA announced its significant advancement in DLSS 3 upscaling technology. Users of GeForce RTX 40 series GPUs can expect a truly enormous performance boost from DLSS 3.
One of the best-looking PC games, Cyberpunk 2077 is extremely powerful with ray tracing enabled and then performance-boosted with DLSS 2.x. However, the upcoming update will add DLSS 3, which will dramatically increase performance on RTX 40 series GPUs.
Alongside the announcements of the new 4080/4090 GPUs, CD Projekt Red confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 is getting a new Ray Tracing: Overdrive mode that takes things to the next level.
The game was already stunning on PC, but now with the 4080/4090 GPUs, you’ll be able to amp the RTX up with 4x the performance utilizing DLSS 3.0 (exclusive to 4000 series).
A new Ray Tracing: Overdrive Mode will be added in a future update for Cyberpunk 2077 by CD PROJEKT RED, which will further increase the game’s already a stunning level of detail. We have NVIDIA RTX Direct Illumination (RTXDI), which will accurately ray-trace every neon sign, street lamp, car headlight, LED billboard, TV, bathing objects, walls, passing cars, and pedestrians in accurate colored lighting.
New updates to Cyberpunk 2077 and Ray Tracing In contrast to the previous solution’s single bounce, Overdrive Mode will have ray-traced indirect lighting and reflections that can bounce multiple times.
NVIDIA claims that global illumination, reflections, and self-reflection will be even more precise, realistic, and immersive. The new Ray Tracing: Overdrive Mode, according to NVIDIA, also has improved, more physically-based lighting, eliminating the need for any additional occlusion techniques.
The GeForce RTX 40 series graphics cards will experience some performance boosts thanks to the new Ada Lovelace GPU architecture because NVIDIA has some specific technologies that supercharge the performance and quality of advanced ray tracing workloads.
When combined with NVIDIA’s new GeForce RTX 40 series graphics cards, the new Cyberpunk 2077 update will provide several performances and visual quality advantages:
- Shader Execution Reordering (SER) is a technique that parallelizes and reorders the execution of ray-tracing threads without sacrificing image quality.
- Opacity Micro maps Increase the efficiency of ray tracing workloads by directly encoding the surface opacity onto the geometry. This will eliminate the need for expensive opacity evaluation during ray traversal and allow for the creation of higher-quality acceleration structures. Applying this technique to transparent or asymmetrically shaped objects, such as fences and foliage, is especially advantageous. The Opacity Micro map format is directly decodable by ray tracing hardware on GeForce RTX 40 Series graphics cards, enhancing performance even further.
- NVIDIA Real-Time Denoisers (NRD) is a real-time performing spatiotemporal ray tracing denoising library that aids in the denoising of low ray-per-pixel signals. In comparison to previous-generation denoisers, NRD enhances the quality and guarantees noise-free, performance-unaffected ray-traced output.

“Here at CD PROJEKT RED, we are very proud to be technology innovators, and DLSS 3 gives us meaningful performance gains to tackle the addition of even higher levels of ray tracing to deliver a visually rich experience for our gamers,” said Jakub Knapik, Art Director at CD PROJEKT RED.
- NVIDIA RTX Direct Illumination (RTXDI) provides precise ray-traced lighting and shadows for every neon sign, street lamp, car headlight, LED billboard, and TV, bathing objects, walls, passing cars, and pedestrians in colorful lighting;
- In contrast to the previous solution’s single bounce, ray-traced indirect lighting and reflections now bounce multiple times. Ray-traced reflections are now rendered at full resolution, further enhancing their quality, and the result is global illumination, reflections, and self-reflection that are even more precise, realistic, and immersive.
- No longer are any additional occlusion techniques required thanks to improved, more physically based lighting.
